“A time comes when one feels the need to reflect on the creative path and experiences traversed. Seven years have passed since my last solo exhibition. I took this break intentionally, nurturing ideas for new creative impulses,” says painter and sculptor Martynas Gaubas. From July 1–31, 2020, Vilniaus rotušė hosted an exhibition celebrating the artist’s twentieth year of creativity.
In the solo exhibition “Rembo. The Golden Age Crisis: Small is Not Enough,” the artist presented works to which he devoted special attention. “These pieces are more refined and deeply felt. Moreover, I conveyed playful ideas on a larger scale this time,” the author explains. As with all of Martynas Gaubas’s work, these pieces feature the characteristics of caricature, parody, and satire.
“I have been and continue to be an observer who enjoys looking at the world, searching for frozen frames; moments that allow the viewer to quickly and accurately grasp the emotion of the work, and the types and characters of the depicted figures through body language,” the artist added.
