Lecture: “Points of Jewish Heritage in Vilnius”

On October 21 at 6 PM, we invite you to the lecture on JEWISH HERITAGE POINTS IN VILNIUS.

Lecturer: Dr. Lara Lempertienė, historian of Jewish culture.

A common sight in Vilnius’s Old Town is a group of tourists standing still in one place, listening intently to their guide’s narration. If we approached them, we would almost certainly understand that this is a tour dedicated to Vilnius’s Jewish heritage. After all, today, the historical documents, memoirs, and research texts tell us more about the city’s material Jewish heritage than do the walls and buildings themselves. The organic existence of this heritage was interrupted, and much of its traces have disappeared, making it resemble a dotted line—fragmented and full of “holes,” omissions, and empty spaces.

However, it is precisely these historical texts that can fill in the missing gaps and help us reconstruct the panorama of Vilnius’s Jewish heritage.

The lecture will present several collections of documents reflecting Jewish Vilnius, which can not only revive the Jewish buildings of Vilnius but also bring to life the faces and works of the people who lived in them.

The lecture series CULTURAL FOUNDATION OF VILNIUS is funded by the Department of Cultural Heritage.
