Exhibition – Lecture: Romantic Filomats

Date

2024 12 06

December 6 at 6 PM

The exhibition tells the brief history of the Vilnius University Filomat Society, introduces its prominent members, and recounts their fates. The society was founded in 1817 and existed until 1823, when the Tsarist authorities uncovered it, interrogated its members, imprisoned them, and exiled them. Among the members were well-known figures such as Adam Mickiewicz, Tomas Zanas, Ignotas Domeika, and others.

We invite you to remember the courageous, romantic, and freedom-seeking filomats, for whom the motto “Homeland, Science, Virtue!” was not just empty words, but a unifying life value. Especially now, it is important for us to remember what freedom truly means and the price we pay for it.

Texts for the exhibition were prepared by Eduardas Budrys, with illustrations by Kristina Karvelytė, translations from Polish by Karolina Šutova. The exhibition was curated and prepared for publication by Aldona Jeleniauskienė, Jurga Kauzonienė, Rūta Skorupskaitė, Linas Janulevičius, with editing by Giedrė Saulienė. The graphic designer is Alfredas Simonavičius.

The event is organized by the Adomas Mickiewicz Library
Partner: Vilnius City Hall
