Musical Celebration of Iceland’s Independence Day at Vilnius Town Hall

On the occasion of Iceland’s Independence Day, the historic Vilnius Town Hall will come alive with a unique celebration of Icelandic and Lithuanian unity, music, and shared values. The event, titled “Let’s Celebrate Together with Music,” will feature two distinguished choirs from both countries, whose joint performance will symbolize strong cultural ties and mutual appreciation.

During the evening, the Vilnius Municipality Choir “Jauna muzika,” one of Lithuania’s finest vocal ensembles, and “Ljósbrá,” one of Iceland’s oldest and most cherished women’s choirs, will perform.

Founded in 1989 and led by acclaimed conductor and composer Vaclovas Augustinas, the choir “Jauna muzika” is known for its dynamic repertoire and exceptional artistic quality. The choir has earned international recognition and frequently performs across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Its mission is to present compelling choral music to audiences worldwide, with a special focus on works by Lithuanian composers.

Joining the choir is the women’s choir “Ljósbrá” from southern Iceland, also founded in 1989. Under the direction of Ingibjörg Erlingsdóttir, “Ljósbrá” nurtures Icelandic women’s voices and stories, placing particular emphasis on works by contemporary Icelandic songwriters.

With 42 members from urban centers and rural communities, the choir embodies the spirit of Iceland’s cultural heritage and community.

This event is not only a celebration of Iceland’s independence but also a reaffirmation of the longstanding friendship between Lithuania and Iceland — two countries connected by shared democratic values, cultural richness, and a love of music.
