The Mystery of Musical Masks. A Sketch is a project of the Musical Theatre study programme that continues to explore the themes of the mask and transformation on stage. Musical works of different characters and styles merge with movement, light, soundscape and painting. Through the interplay of these artistic languages, a distinctive world emerges in which the familiar can unexpectedly take on a different form.
Here, the mask does more than conceal the face. By removing everyday facial expression, it brings the language of the body to the fore, offering a different perspective on human states and on what often remains unspoken. Movement does not illustrate the music – it extends it, giving sound a physical form and an inner, emotional expression. Sometimes the slightest gesture, a pause or a moment of silence is enough to reveal a new meaning.
At the creative heart of this mystery lies the sketch – an unfinished thought, a spontaneous brushstroke, an intermediate moment when an idea has already emerged, yet its final form remains unknown. Each musical story leaves behind its own colour, mood and trace. These layers accumulate, merge and become part of a painting – a visible sign of something that would otherwise disappear with the final sound.
A Sketch is not simply a predictable story. For one person, it may become a memory; for another, an intuition, a question, or a feeling that has yet to be named.
Can something that sounds and disappears remain visible?
Perhaps the answer lies on the canvas. Or perhaps – in the memory of the audience.
