Vilnius Town Hall is a reflection of a modern city

Representative Events
The Town Hall has long been regarded as one of the most significant venues in Vilnius, exuding a majestic aura that perfectly suits its role in representation. This esteemed locale is the backdrop for ceremonial meetings of the Vilnius City Municipality Council, the presentation of prestigious awards, the celebration of national holidays, the reception of foreign delegations, and the organization of important gatherings.

Throughout its history, the Town Hall has welcomed numerous distinguished guests, including British monarchs Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, the Swedish royal couple King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, Dutch King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima, as well as Belgian King Albert II and Queen Paola.

Notably, it is here that U.S. President George Bush made his famous declaration during his 2002 visit to Lithuania: “Anyone who chooses Lithuania as their enemy will become an enemy of the United States of America.”

In addition, the Town Hall has hosted ceremonies honoring the city’s esteemed citizens. Among those recognized as honorary citizens of Vilnius are the renowned writer Česlovas Miloš, Icelandic politician and diplomat Jón Baldvin Hannibalsson, distinguished writer Tomas Venclova, celebrated artist Samuel Bak, former President of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus, professor Vytautas Landsbergis, academician Jonas Kubilius, and many others who have significantly enhanced Vilnius and Lithuania’s reputation on the global stage.

Cultural Events
The Town Hall is a vibrant hub for art, music, literature, and all that enriches the cultural lives of its citizens. The spirit of Vilnius’s Old Town opens its doors to all twelve muses, hosting literary afternoons, poetry evenings, classical and contemporary concerts, theatrical performances, discussions on the city’s history and society, scientific conferences, seminars, film screenings, book presentations, art exhibitions, photography displays, and a diverse range of activities that foster an open and dynamic cultural community.

Historically, Vilnius Town Hall has served not only as a significant administrative center but also as a cultural landmark. It has been the site of lively fairs and markets, including the enduring Kaziuk Fair, where musicians and singers have entertained locals amid vibrant processions and festive carnivals.

In 1785, prior to renovations by the esteemed architect Laurynas Gucevičius, the Vilnius City Theater began its operations within the Town Hall. After its reconstruction, the theater flourished, hosting plays, operas, and musical performances featuring renowned musicians and composers. Notably, in 1848, the Town Hall was the venue for the premiere of Stanisław Moniuszko’s opera “Halka,” conducted by the composer himself. Following the lifting of the press ban in 1906, the first Lithuanian play, Marcelinas Šikšnis’s tragedy “The Duke of Pilėnai,” was performed here. The theater operated until 1924.

From the late 19th century onward, the Town Hall transformed into a gathering place for artists, poets, and creators, with the Great Hall frequently hosting banquets, charity concerts, art festivals, and Christmas fairs, while attempts were made to revive the tradition of Viennese balls.

World-famous artists have graced this prestigious cultural space, including legendary cellist and conductor Mstislav Rostropovich, violinist and conductor Yehudi Menuhin, celebrated Spanish opera singer Montserrat Caballé, acclaimed jazz pianist Chick Corea, and notable violinist Gidon Kremer, among others.

Today, Vilnius Town Hall represents the city’s rich historical heritage while promoting modern culture to both longtime residents and the energetic, curious younger generation.

Commercial Events
Located in the vibrant heart of the city, Vilnius Town Hall is an exquisite venue for a variety of commercial opportunities. It accommodates both public and private events, providing the perfect setting for conferences, seminars, concerts, commemorative ceremonies, anniversary celebrations, and corporate functions.

Today, the Town Hall serves as a vibrant reflection of the capital’s political and social life. By keeping pace with innovations, it remains modern and cosmopolitan, welcoming both the residents of Vilnius and visitors from around the world. This space intertwines the threads of various eras; alongside its classical elements, there is always room for creativity and new ideas. Vilnius is celebrated not only for its rich historical heritage but also for its capacity to bridge the gap to unseen and uncharted experiences.
