The exhibition “Bound by Creativity” invites visitors to explore the unique artistic universe of the Vilutis family, where art and life intertwine so naturally that creativity seems to pass seamlessly from one generation to the next. This is not merely an exhibition of individual artists’ works – it is a story of a family thread that unites diverse talents, styles, and artistic worlds.
The founders of the Vilutis dynasty – Jonas Vilutis (1907–1978), painter and scenographer, and Emilija Liobytė-Vilutienė (1916–1955), sculptor, painter, and designer for puppet theaters – created a creative environment from which new generations of artists emerged. Emilija’s sister Aldona (1915–1985) became a legend of Vilnius culture: a writer, playwright, translator, and actress, nurturing Lithuanian cultural spirit through times of occupation.
The second generation includes Nijolė Ingelevičiūtė-Vilutienė, Mikalojus Povilas Vilutis, and his brother Kristupas – masters of graphics, illustrators, and painters. Mikalojus Povilas is also a sculptor and writer. The artistic legacy continues with the daughters Emilija Balas and Aldona, and Aldona’s son Šarūnas Rapolas Meliešius. Each brings a distinct creative voice, yet all are united by the family’s artistic thread.
The exhibition invites viewers to journey through the family “album”: each artwork, photograph, or detail reveals not only an artistic path but also personal life and familial connections. The diverse styles – from Emilija Liobytė-Vilutienė’s impressionism, Jonas Vilutis’ realism, Nijolė Vilutienė’s expressionism, Emilija Bal’s pop-influenced painting, to Mikalojus Povilas and Kristupas Vilutis’ surrealist motifs – merge into a unique phenomenon known as “Vilutism.”
This exhibition is a tribute and a commemoration, especially this year, marking the anniversary of Emilija Liobytė-Vilutienė’s passing. It reminds us that art is not only inherited but also created collectively, within family and community, and that sometimes a single artistic thread can connect an entire creative universe.
