JŪRA (The Sea) is an emotionally charged and evocative contemporary dance performance dedicated to the 150th anniversary of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis.
Through the harmonious fusion of dance, music, and sound, Jūra reveals the delicate and complex relationship between humanity and nature in the contemporary world — addressing themes from environmental pollution and the threat of war to the enduring inner light, hope, and the quest for truth.
Choreographer and director Birutė Letukaitė uses the language of contemporary dance to explore society’s wounds while weaving in elements of romanticism and beauty. The evocative music of M. K. Čiurlionis provides a living emotional backdrop throughout the performance. This evolving work highlights the symbolic figure of Čiurlionis through movement, music, and poignant excerpts from his letters.
The production features dancers from Kaunas Dance Theatre Aura, alongside young talents from the National M. K. Čiurlionis School of Arts and the Kaunas Mikas Petrauskas School of Performing Arts. Their participation brings freshness to the piece and symbolizes the continuity of Lithuania’s rich artistic heritage.
Adding to the experience, the contemporary music ensemble NIKO, residents of Vilnius Town Hall, will perform acclaimed works by composer Gediminas Gelgotas, celebrated for their powerful emotional intensity and minimalist beauty.
