One of the world’s most renowned accordion virtuosos, Martynas Levickis, will present a solo programme to the audience of the XIV International M. K. Čiurlionis Music Festival, featuring some of the most celebrated works by the great classical composers – music that will delight both connoisseurs and those discovering classical music for the first time. Alongside works by W. A. Mozart, G. Mahler, A. Piazzolla, F. Chopin and Ph. Glass, the accordionist will also perform his own arrangements of Lithuanian folk songs.
M. Levickis’s musical journey began not in a concert hall, but in the dense forests of Lithuania. At just three years old, he began imitating birdsong and the rustling of leaves on a toy accordion – a gift purchased by his uncle, born out of necessity when the family could not afford a piano. What initially seemed like a compromise soon became the foundation of an extraordinary career. At the age of eight, Martynas was admitted to the Saulius Sondeckis School of Arts in Šiauliai. He later studied with Prof. Owen Murray at the Royal Academy of Music in London and with Prof. Iñaki Alberdi at Musikene – the Higher School of Music of San Sebastián.
Currently based in Germany, M. Levickis is one of Lithuania’s most active performing musicians. Audiences at venues such as the Royal Albert Hall in London, Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie, the Konzerthaus Berlin and the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts have been captivated by his performances. He is a frequent guest at prestigious festivals, including the Rheingau Musik Festival and Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. He has also received distinguished recognition from both: in 2023, he was named Artist in Residence at Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, while in 2025, he was selected as a Fokus Artist at the Rheingau Musik Festival. Lithuania’s most prominent accordionist of our time has received more than 30 international awards, including the Coupe Mondiale (2010), one of the most prestigious accordion competitions in the world. In 2023, he was also awarded the Opus Klassik title of Instrumentalist of the Year.
