Nightfall Music at the Heart of Vilnius

Date

2025 08 19

On August 19 at 10 PM, as the summer night settles over the rooftops of Vilnius, the historic vaulted halls of Vilnius Town Hall will come alive with the sound of the piano.

In this late-night concert, composer Gediminas Gelgotas will perform some of the most evocative works of modern classical music — the distilled, meditative Études for piano by American minimalist Philip Glass. These pieces unfold like musical mantras: seemingly simple at first, yet their slow, continuous evolution reveals ever-shifting emotional shades and intricate sonic geometry.

The program will also feature Gelgotas’ own music — excerpts from his latest cycle, “Recompositions”. These delicate soundscapes, infused with contemporary minimalism and post-minimalism, are as eloquent in their silences as in their notes. In Gelgotas’ hands, pauses resonate with the same intensity as sound.

Gediminas Gelgotas is a celebrated Lithuanian composer and conductor, founder of the New Ideas Chamber Orchestra (NIKO). His music is both modern and deeply introspective — a reflection of today’s world, yet rooted in spiritual depth.

This intimate, nocturnal concert invites the audience to pause, to listen, and to experience music in the way we hear it only when the world around us grows still.
