The reflection on the Soviet period is a complex phenomenon, where experiences of culture, art, and political control intertwine. Under those circumstances, artistic creation often involved balancing between mandatory conformity and courageous signs of resistance. Today, from a contemporary perspective, we often forget that even the slightest expression of modern forms at that time signified nonconformity to the norms dictated by ideology.

Art critic Jolita Mieželaitienė will review the various strategies of resistance to Soviet ideology that emerged during different periods. In the postwar years, under conditions of repression, art was often suppressed, yet simultaneously sought ways of survival. During the so-called “Thaw,” greater creative freedom and manifestations of modernism appeared, shaping an alternative cultural field. In the late Soviet period, during perestroika and the Sąjūdis movement, art became an especially important space for oppositional thought, uniting not only artists but also society at large.

The presentation will discuss examples of artworks, the atmosphere of the times, artists’ behavioral strategies, the activities of informal groups, and the role of state institutions, which at times paradoxically contributed to the establishment of forms of resistance.

The aim of this meeting is to reveal how, in various forms, creativity became an expression of resistance to Soviet ideology and what significance it held within the broader context of the intelligentsia and social movements.
